Pavers Per Square Foot: Coverage Chart by Size

Compare theoretical face-area coverage for common paver sizes and learn when joints, nominal dimensions and manufacturer coverage change the count.

For a rectangular paver measured in inches, theoretical pavers per square foot equals 144 ÷ (length × width). This counts face area without joints. It is a comparison tool, not guaranteed installed coverage for a product with the same nominal size.

Dimensions below are treated as exact face dimensions for arithmetic. Products sold under these nominal labels can have different actual dimensions. No joint allowance, cutting allowance or packaging rounding is included.

Face-area coverage chart
Nominal size (in) Theoretical face area (sq ft) Pieces per sq ft Raw pieces for 100 sq ft
4 × 8 0.2222 4.5000 450
6 × 6 0.2500 4.0000 400
6 × 9 0.3750 2.6667 266.667
8 × 8 0.4444 2.2500 225
12 × 12 1.0000 1.0000 100
12 × 24 2.0000 0.5000 50
16 × 16 1.7778 0.5625 56.250
24 × 24 4.0000 0.2500 25

Larger entries may be marketed as paving slabs. Being listed in an area chart does not establish vehicle suitability; see thickness and aspect ratio.

What joints change

A repeating rectangular module includes one joint pitch in each direction:

Module pieces per sq ft = 144 ÷ [(L + J) × (W + J)]

Example: an actual 8 × 4-inch face with an illustrative ⅛-inch joint has module area 33.515625 ÷ 144 = 0.232747 sq ft, or approximately 4.2965 pieces per sq ft. Face-area coverage is 4.5 pieces per sq ft. Module coverage includes paving area occupied by joints.

Do not add a gap to dimensions already reported as nominal installed pitch. Spacer bars, chamfers and product sizing make a tape measurement different from a manufacturer’s coverage basis. Measure the body and consult the technical sheet rather than treating a bevel as full joint width.

Why product sheets can disagree with this chart

Manufacturers may report coverage from actual dimensions, intended joints, a complete laying pattern or a mixed-size package. Mutual Materials’ Hollands sheet reports its own units-per-area figure. A nominal 4 × 8 label does not make every Holland-style paver interchangeable.

For a mixed-size bundle, use its coverage and laying ratios. One size from this chart cannot represent an entire blend. Verify regional product sheets and whether partial layers are sold.

Use coverage without compounding rounding

Multiply net area by unrounded pieces per square foot, apply any selected allowance once, then round the final count up. For the 6 × 9 row, rounding 2.6667 up to 3 before multiplying by 100 produces 300 rather than approximately 267 net pieces.

If buying by square footage, confirm how the supplier converts the order to layers or pallets. Keep border quantities separate from the field until you know they use the same product and package.

Compare face and module coverage in the Paver Calculator. For purchasing, follow the quantity calculation guide using your actual product dimensions or verified coverage.
