Paver Sand Calculator
Calculate loose screeded ASTM C33 concrete bedding sand volume, cubic yards, and tons. Distinct from joint filler sand.
This calculator estimates the nominal loose screeded bedding sand layer placed between the compacted aggregate base and conventional concrete pavers. Permeable pavement systems use open-graded angular aggregate (ASTM No. 8 or No. 89) and different layer thicknesses. For joint stabilization, use our Polymeric Sand Calculator.
1. Project Footprint Geometry
Select your layout to calculate the surface area receiving pavers and bedding sand.
20.00 ft
12.00 ft
2. Bedding Layer Depth
Specify loose uncompacted screed thickness (CMHA conventional planning default: 1.0 in).
CMHA PAV-TEC-002-22: Uncompacted nominal 1.0" (25 mm) screed depth is the conventional installation planning standard. Follow project specifications for engineered depths.
3. Material Specification & Order Allowance
Configure ordering allowance and material bulk density.
Coarse, washed concrete sand placed and screeded loose beneath conventional pavers. Warning: Never use fine masonry mortar sand, stone dust, or limestone screenings as bedding material.
Optional user-selected allowance compensating for screed rail voids, slight base grade variations, and loose handling during placement.
Enter supplier/product density when available. No universal bulk density is assumed or prescribed by ASTM C33. Density is required only if converting volume to weight or retail bag counts.
4. Bag Packaging & Pricing (Optional)
Configure bag weight sizes, delivery increments, and optional unit pricing.
Bag counts are calculated strictly as Estimated Weight ÷ Bag Weight (when bulk density is entered).
Includes 0% ordering allowance on 240 sq ft project surface area.
Project surface area receiving concrete pavers and bedding sand
CMHA conventional installation planning default: 1.0" (25 mm) loose uncompacted screed depth (CMHA PAV-TEC-002-22)
Nominal screeded bedding volume in-place prior to paver placement and plate compaction (CMHA loose screed baseline)
Standard conversion from cubic feet to cubic yards (27 cu ft = 1 cu yd)
Unadjusted planning order volume (equals nominal in-place volume)
Formulas, Constants & Source Standards
V_screed = (Area × Depth / 12) ÷ 27 | V_order = V_screed × (1 + Allowance) | Weight = V_order × Density | Bags = ceil( Weight / BagWeight )Bedding sand is screeded in a loose condition; it is NOT pre-compacted prior to laying pavers. Initial compaction occurs from the top of pavers after placement. Bedding sand area equals the paver surface footprint and does not automatically expand by the aggregate base extension.

CMHA & Industry Standards
- CMHA PAV-TEC-002-22 (formerly Tech Spec 2 / Tech Note 2): Construction of Interlocking Concrete Pavements (industry guidance: uniform nominal 1.0" uncompacted screeded bedding layer).
- ASTM C33/C33M-24a / CSA A23.1: Standard Specification for Concrete Aggregates (coarse, washed, angular concrete sand).
- CMHA PAV-TEC-004-23: Structural Design of Interlocking Concrete Pavements for Roads and Parking Lots.
Core Assumptions
- Washed coarse concrete sand conforming to ASTM C33/C33M-24a or CSA A23.1. Never use fine masonry mortar sand, limestone screenings, or stone dust as bedding material.
- Nominal loose screed depth is 1.0 inch (25 mm) per CMHA PAV-TEC-002-22; consolidation occurs during paver compaction depending on local sand conditions.
- Bedding sand bulk density is an optional planning input (reference baseline 1.35 tons/cu yd); actual density depends on local quarry source, gradation, and moisture content.
Rounding & Purchase Logic
- Volume maintained as floating-point precision and formatted to 2 decimal places for display.
- Quarry bulk delivery rounded up to user-selected increments (0.25 cu yd, 0.5 ton, or exact). Bag packaging rounded UP (ceil) to whole bags.
Scope Limitations
- Conventional / non-permeable paver installations only. Permeable pavement systems use open-graded angular bedding aggregate (ASTM No. 8 or No. 89) and different layer thicknesses.
- Bedding sand must never be used to level an uneven or poorly graded aggregate base.
- Bedding sand layer is strictly separated from polymeric / joint stabilizing sand.
