How to Measure and Calculate Square Footage for Paver Patios
A comprehensive guide to measuring rectangular, circular, and irregular backyard spaces with accurate waste allowances.
Accurate measurement is the cornerstone of any paver project. Miscalculating your square footage can lead to costly delays or thousands of dollars in surplus materials.
The Three Step Measurement Process
- Break Down Irregular Shapes: Divide complex curved or multi-tier yards into simple geometric rectangles, right triangles, or circular arcs.
- Account for Perimeter Base Extension: When edge restraints are spiked into a flexible base, include an appropriate horizontal base extension (commonly 4 to 6 inches, or equal to base thickness) along unconfined outer borders where specified by your restraint system.
- Apply the Right Waste Allowance: A 5% factor is typical for straight running bond rectangles, while diagonal 45° herringbone layouts commonly use a 10% to 12% cut planning allowance.
